I went to sleep earlier than usual last night so had a great start today. I beat my roommates to the shower, prepared today’s “lesson plan” and even had time for breakfast. I printed English and Portuguese lyrics from Adele’s latest album since they don’t contain slang. I also found the Oxford Picture Dictionary on the shelf and decided to bring it along to change things up for the teenagers. The dictionary is extremely helpful and contains exercises that are great for group activities. The teenagers loved the dictionary and each tried to keep it for themselves! I decided to order a copy from Amazon since I plan to continue studying Portuguese when I return home. I was asked to sing Adele’s “Hello” along with the song playing on Jalisson’s iPhone so they could hear the pronunciation of each word on the printouts. They were so focused on the words they didn’t seem to notice I butchered every note. I ended my workday with the teenagers doing something I haven’t done in years…
After lunch we had another Portuguese language lesson and our second Capoeira session. There was a small group today so the instructor referred to us by the name of country we were born in. We were asked to try some of the movements that require flipping and I think I represented Estados Unidos well.
I also made it to the gym today and was able to get in a good amount of cardio, and complete my treadmill exercises I learned in rehab. We ended the evening at a Japanese restaurant since it’s Sherri’s last night in Brazil. I ordered a couple of sushi rolls I’ve never seen on a menu. The roll with the cucumber came out with a flame around the exterior of the plate.
I was starting to feel a little homesick but was extremely happy at dinner. I now realize how important air conditioning and good food is in my life.
