The Fast and the Furious: Crete Drift

I chose this blog title since I truly feel I spent my time in Greece with a group of [45] kindred spirits who enjoy the adrenaline of new life experiences.  A blog can't sum up our time in Crete, but the stories and photos will provide insight into the culture that exists on the island.

Crete was our "home base" for most of our stay in Greece.  I didn't sleep more than a 3 hr stretch the entire time I was gone.  I befriended just about everyone in the group so I often found myself accompanying people on one off explorations outside of the planned group travel itinerary, and staying up all night with whomever decided sleep wasn't a necessity in that moment.  One of the resort bartenders said "the Americans and Russians bring the energy" while raising his arms in the air.

Here are a few photos from the resort.  Epic fail on my part for not taking more photos but if you're interested Google has plenty of the Bella Beach Hotel.

The restaurants, shops, clubs and beaches were located at Xersonisos on Crete Island.  When we walked the streets and entered the establishments, the energy level of the natives rose to match ours.  We were somewhat of a walking party bus that broke into smaller subsets.  I can't tell you the numbers of times I heard "Hey, your friends were just here."  We'd order drinks and our servers would join the party and drink with us!  The clubs in Xersonisos don't close until 7 AM!

Circling back to the blog title...I had the most FUN during our ATV tour of Crete! Daily practice making lefts around Interstate 285 in ATL like a NASCAR driver came in handy. Our tour group was split up by beginner and advanced drivers.  I was the lucky driver in the advanced group that was 1st in line behind our guide [who I referred to as Dominic Toretto] and let's just say I'm really good at playing follow the leader.  The tour was 50/50 on and off road.  Keep in mind the terrain is mountainous so every trail was circling up or downhill and sometimes along cliffs [the adrenaline junkies united].

On a more serious note PLEASE be careful if/when riding ATVs abroad.  I had a good time, but there were a couple of accidents that left an ATV totaled and a Dune Buggy needing to be towed. [Yikes] Neither driver was seriously injured [thankfully] but both received medical treatment.

Here are some photos from the ATV Tour:

I'll end with a Fun Fact...according to our ATV tour guide aka Domnic Toretto, the "Temple of Zeus" from Greek Mythology is located under the furtherest mountain in the center of this photo.
