Athens: A Modern View of History

Writer: tarynfeldertarynfelder

While I was in Greece Nana sent me an email that said...

"I want to see Greece the ships they build the restaurants and the Greek statues and the Olympic stadium that was always talked abt in history."

I had the restaurants covered but was going to have to stay focused in Athens to make sure I captured whatever they taught children about Greece in Jersey City Public Schools in the 40s.

I started taking notes during our bus tour of Athens but quickly gave up after asking "What she say?" multiple times within the first 10 min stretch of facts.

My "notes" are below:

- Population of Greece 11 MM | Population of Athens 5 MM

- Athens is over populated so traffic is regulated by only allowing odd | even number license plates in city's center on certain days.

2004

- Olympic stadium used for archery and the marathon ending

- Had my first "What she say?" moment when I missed the name

- FWIW it's made of Marvel

Temple of Zeus

- Here it is in Athens, but my ATV tour guide "showed" it to me while I was in Crete.  [I had to go to Greece to learn the truth about Greek Mythology]

Arch of Hadrian

- Separates old town from new town

I'm going to have a hard time explaining the remainder of the tour to Nana...

A decision was made to remove and place the artifacts from Acropolis in an indoor museum for preservation.

We weren't allowed to take photos of all the artifacts, but here's what I captured.

And here's what's left of Acropolis today.

I'm sure these photos will be thought provoking for Nana.  She's seen and experienced so much during her lifetime, but is now viewing her version of history from my vantage point.
